Easy spicy chicken wings recipe that is quick and cooks in about 30 minutes. These spicy baked chicken wings are packed full of flavor, hot, juicy, moist, and tender inside. The skin is crispy and they make for great appetizers, snacks, or main dishes served with a side dish.
Chicken wings are my favorite part of the chicken. It's dark meat that is flavorful, easy to season or marinate, and cooks fast.
A nice platter of spicy wings with a cool drink like iced tea, juice, or coffee is right up our alley and this spicy baked chicken wings recipe is so good you'll be making it over and over again just like we do.
They are oven baked so contain less oil and fat melts off the wings during cooking.
They can also be air fried and I have included the air fryer instructions in this post.
Spicy Chicken Wings Recipe
This spicy chicken wings recipe is simple, straightforward, quick, and easy to make. You only need to marinate, bake and you have the tastiest spicy wings that make a perfect appetizer, side dish, or gameday snack. You can even just add the dry rub and oil then bake straightaway without marinating.
It's also great for bbqs, parties and get togethers.
Packed full of protein, this recipe is low carb and keto friendly.
The wings are spicy but not overly hot it's unedible and you can customize it to how spicy you want it by adjusting the pepper used.
They are juicy, tender, have crispy skin and are super tasty.
Making it requires minimal prep and clean up is easy especially if you line the baking tray with parchment paper.
No watching over the chicken while it cooks just set the oven timer and go do something else till it alerts you it's cooked.
As it's oven-baked, it keeps the stovetop free for you to cook other dishes.
You can double this recipe.
Ingredients
Chicken wings - Cut into drummettes and flats or use the whole wings.
Paprika
Cayenne pepper - You can substitute this with black pepper or pepper flakes.
Ginger powder
Garlic powder - substitute with garlic granules.
Salt
Hot sauce - I used Sriracha. You can use any other hot sauce like Franks , and others.
Olive oil - You can substitute with vegetable oil, or sunflower oil.
How to make Spicy Chicken Wings
Make the spicy marinade - Add the Paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, ginger powder, sriracha sauce, salt, and oil olive in a bowl. Mix till well combined.
If you want to make it sweet and spicy chicken wings, add a tablespoon of honey to the marinade.
Marinate the chicken - Wash the chicken and pat it dry with a kitchen towel/paper towel. Add in the marinade to the chicken and mix till it's well rubbed all over the chicken and all parts are covered in the marinade.
Cover the bowl and put in the fridge to marinate for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Bake - Bring the chicken out of the fridge, line a baking tray with baking paper, and arrange the wings on it in a single layer.
Put the tray in the middle rack on the oven. Bake at a temperature of 175C for 10 minutes then increase to 200C /400F and bake for another 15 minutes or till done.
When it's done, bring the baking tray out and let the chicken rest in the tray for 5 minutes.
Serve and enjoy.
Air fryer Spicy Chicken Wings
You can make spicy chicken wings in the air fryer and the process is similar to making it in the oven. Here's how to:
Prep wings - Wash the chicken and pat it dry with a kitchen towel/paper towel.
Marinate - Add in the marinade to the chicken and mix till it's well rubbed all over the chicken and all parts are covered in the marinade.
Cover the bowl and put it in the fridge to marinate for 30 minutes.
Air fry - Bring the chicken out of the fridge, and arrange them in the basket of the air fryer in a single layer.
Set the air fryer to 185C and air fry spicy wings for 25 minutes or till done.
Air fryer brand and varies so you might need to adjust the temperature or cook for longer. Bring out the basket and serve the air-fried spicy chicken wings.
What to serve with
You can serve it as appetizers on its own or with dips such as blue cheese dip, buffalo sauce, and others. You can also serve with side dishes like below listed:
Potatoes side dish such as boiled potatoes, air fryer potatoes.
Rice dishes such as spicy rice, Spanish rice, curry rice.
Vegetables like carrots, and celery.
How to Store
Leave it to cool completely, then put them in an airtight container or ziptop bag, and store in the fridge or freezer. If you will eat them before or by day 5, you can keep in the fridge where they last for up to 5 days. If you need to store for longer, store it in the freezer where they will last for up to 6 months.
You can reheat in the oven, air fryer or microwave.
To reheat in the microwave: You will need a microwave-safe plate. Arrange the wings on the plate, cover with a microwave cover, and set at a high temperature setting to cook for 2 minutes. If not warmed through after this time, add additional time..
To reheat in the oven: Place them on a baking paper-lined tray and bake in the oven at a temperature of 180C/380F for 4 minutes or till they are heated through.
To reheat in the air fryer: Arrange them in the air fryer basket and set the air fryer to 180C/375F for 4 minutes. If not heated through at this time, add additional time checking every 2 minutes. Be careful so they don't dry out.
Pro tips
- If you washed the chicken, immediately clean the sink and wherever it touches.
- Pat dry wings with a paper towel before adding the spicy marinade so the marinade is not watered.
- Put in the fridge to marinate for 30 minutes or more.
- Line the baking tray with baking paper so the tray is easy to clean after baking.
- Don't pile the wings on top of each other. Arrange in a single file for even cooking.
- Oven and air fryer brand varies so adjust the oven temperature.
- Start with low heat to melt the fat then increase to get the skin crispy.
