You can use boneless chicken thighs or chicken breast to make it and for extra stickiness, glaze with teriyaki sauce 3 minutes before end of the cooking time.

Chicken On A Stick Marinade

This marinade consists of soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, ginger, garlic, onion powder, black pepper and. Add everything together in a bowl, and mix till combined. It’s then ready to use on chicken. Other marinades that can also be used that have Chinese flavors are Teriyaki sauce, Honey garlic, and Honey soy sauce.

To marinate the chicken, add the chicken into a ziploc, add in the marinade , mix till well combined, zip the bag, and put in the fridge to marinate.

Use a bowl- Add chicken and marinade into a bowl, mix till well combined, cover with clingfilm, and put in the fridge and leave to marinate for 30 minutes – 4 hours.

How To Make Chinese Chicken On A Stick

Soak the skewers in cold water for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Prep the chicken – Clean, pat dry and cut the chicken into bite sized cubes.

Make the marinade- In a bowl, add the soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, garlic powder, onion granules, ginger powder, hot sauce/black pepper, and vinegar. Mix till well combined.

Marinate chicken- Add the chicken cubes and marinade into a bowl.

Mix till thoroughly combined.

Cover the bowl, put it in the fridge, and marinate the chicken for 30 minutes to 4 hours.

Thread chicken – Bring out the chicken, and thread them on the sticks.

Put them in the air fryer and air fry at 400F/200C for 5 minutes, turn them to the other side, and air fry for another 5 minutes or till they are cooked. (See below for oven and grill instructions).

How To Cook It in The Oven

Put the Chinese skewers on a baking tray, put the tray in a pre-heated oven and bake at a temperature of 200C/400F for 15 minutes or till cooked. Turning the chicken at halfway mark so all sides brown evenly.

When cooked, bring them out, and serve.

To Cook It On The BBQ Grill

If cooking on the BBQ grill, turn the chicken every 2-3 minutes.
Use low heat so the sticky marinade does not burn badly before the Chicken sticks are cooked. Cook for 12 minutes.

To Cook It On the Stove

Put a griddle or skillet on stove, brush with oil, and put on medium heat.

Add in the chicken sticks and cook on each side for 3-4 minutes each. Total of 6-8 minutes.

Take off heat and serve.

How Long To Cook Chicken On A Stick

The cook time will vary on the method of cooking, size of the skewered chicken, and cooking temperature.

How long to cook chicken on a stick in the oven is 15-20 minutes at a temperature of 400F/200C.

For How long to cook Chinese skewers in the air fryer is between 10-15 minutes.

How long to cook chicken on a stick on the grill is 8-12 minutes.

To cook it on a skillet, or griddle on the stovetop takes 6-10 minutes.

  • 1 kg (2lb) Boneless chicken breast or Boneless Chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup Soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup Honey

    It would be really helpful if the prep time actually reflected the time it takes to marinate the chicken and soak the skewers. 10 minutes is misleading.
